Latvia will strengthen its air defense system with new radars selected on Ukraine's advice

The Latvian National Armed Forces will soon receive several new radars, selected on the recommendation of the Ukrainian side to strengthen air defense. The new systems are designed specifically to detect low-flying objects.

This was announced on Latvian Radio by Kaspars Pudans, Commander of the Latvian Armed Forces. The need for additional equipment arose following an incident over the weekend, when a previously undetected drone crashed into Lake Dridzis in Latgale and exploded.

According to the commander, air target detection coverage in the country is currently not uniform across the country, as air defense units are primarily deployed to protect the largest cities. To improve Latvia’s defense capabilities, additional radars, more powerful acoustic detection systems, and autonomously controlled remote systems are needed, which will have to be deployed as densely as possible. Kaspars Pūdans also noted that many of the anti-drone capabilities currently available to the Latvian army are already similar to those successfully used by the Ukrainian military on the battlefield.

On the morning of May 23, another drone incursion was recorded in Latvia. Prior to this, air raid alerts due to UAVs had been declared in the country almost every day that week.

According to The Telegraph, Russia has allegedly learned to intercept and “reroute” Ukrainian drones, forcing them to fly toward NATO countries. Due to massive electronic warfare attacks, the drones lose their bearings and begin to veer off course.
