Lee Je-myung will meet with Wang Yi amid a peace initiative regarding the peninsula
South Korean President Lee Jae-myung will meet with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at Cheong Wa Dae on Thursday. The two sides are expected to discuss the future of bilateral relations and the regional situation, according to the Korea Herald.
It is expected that the talks will focus heavily on Lee’s initiative for multilateral consultations on formally ending the 1950–1953 Korean War. In a speech marking Liberation Day last week, the South Korean president proposed that interested parties begin discussions to replace the current “unstable armistice system” with a peace regime.
China could be a key participant in such a process, given its role in the 1953 Armistice Agreement and its long-standing political and economic ties with Pyongyang. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian previously stated that maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and promoting a political settlement are in the common interests of all parties.

Wang Yi, who arrived in South Korea on Wednesday for a two-day visit, will also hold separate talks and have lunch with Presidential National Security Advisor Wi Seong-lak. On Wednesday, the Chinese diplomat is also scheduled to hold talks and attend an official dinner with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun.
The meeting comes amid statements by U.S. President Donald Trump expressing his desire to resume dialogue with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Trump stated that he had ordered a significant reduction in joint U.S.-South Korea military exercises, citing their cost and his “very good relationship” with Kim. He also said that Kim Jong-un had responded to his proposal for dialogue, without specifying when or how the communication took place. This is Wang Yi’s first official visit to South Korea since September 2021.
