Emails from .ru addresses to Estonian state institutions will be quarantined
Emails from addresses in the .ru domain sent to Estonian state institutions will no longer be delivered directly starting from the end of August. They will be centrally routed to quarantine for additional checks aimed at preventing cyberattacks.
As ERR News reports, the new mechanism will apply to state institutions that already operate in the secure state cyberspace. At the same time, not all state bodies will join it, and it does not cover local self-government bodies.
Additional protection
Estonian Minister of Justice and Digital Affairs Liisa Pakosta said that the decision is an additional measure to protect state institutions from cyberattacks. According to her, since 2022, the number of cyberattacks against Estonia has grown exponentially, and a significant share of them is linked to Russia.

Pakosta also said that thanks to the work of specialists, cyberattacks against Estonia have not been successful. At the same time, she mentioned large-scale cyberattacks that, according to her, were successful against the public sectors of Latvia and Lithuania.
Automatic rerouting
According to the minister, the new procedure will not create additional bureaucracy for state bodies: emails will be rerouted automatically and centrally. The specific procedure will depend on the security rules established by each institution, which must comply with cybersecurity requirements.
Estonian courts have already said that they will ask participants in proceedings not to use .ru domain addresses for correspondence. ERR News notes that many Estonian residents, including among the Russian-speaking population, still use mailboxes on Russian servers.
