Lithuania has closed its investigation into the damage to undersea cables in the Baltic Sea

The Lithuanian Prosecutor General’s Office has closed the pre-trial investigation into the damage to the undersea fiber-optic cables connecting Lithuania and Sweden in the Baltic Sea, which occurred in November 2024.

This was reported by LRT.

As noted by the Lithuanian agency, the investigation was closed after it was determined that no harm was caused to Lithuania, as the cables were damaged on the seabed within Sweden’s exclusive economic zone.

“This conclusion was reached after determining the exact location of the incident with precise geographic coordinates. This circumstance is crucial for assessing jurisdiction and the limits of liability,” the Lithuanian Prosecutor General’s Office stated.

The agency added that investigations into the damaged cables in the Baltic Sea are ongoing in Sweden and Finland.

As a reminder, the Finnish Defense Command reported in its annual military intelligence review that Russia is likely to continue its attempts to damage underwater infrastructure in the Baltic Sea. The document notes that undersea cables and other critical infrastructure remain potential targets for Moscow’s sabotage operations.

Two Russian communication cables connecting St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad were damaged in the Gulf of Finland.
