Nearly half of Germans expect Merz to resign by the end of the year
Nearly half of those surveyed in Germany believe that Friedrich Merz will step down as chancellor by the end of the year. This is according to the results of a recent poll conducted in the country.
The poll showed that 48% of the 1,611 adults surveyed expect Merz to no longer be chancellor by the end of the year, while 31% believe he will remain in office, and 21% did not respond.
Merz, whose approval ratings have plummeted in recent months, may suffer another humiliating defeat on Sunday in elections in two eastern federal states — two weeks after the far-right “Alternative for Germany” party won a decisive victory in Saxony-Anhalt.
The election in that state sparked serious speculation about whether the chancellor might be forced to resign.
According to the latest polls, the CDU is polling at around 7% in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which is dangerously close to the 5% threshold required to win seats in the state parliament. If these figures are confirmed, it will be the CDU’s worst result in any of Germany’s 16 federal states or at the national level since World War II.
In Berlin, the Left Party is narrowly ahead of the CDU, putting the conservatives at risk of losing the mayoral seat in Germany’s capital.
