Mahama: Ghana has not approved teaching Arabic and Chinese in all public schools
Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama said that the government has not approved a policy to teach Arabic and Chinese in all public schools in the country. He urged people to disregard reports about the alleged nationwide introduction of these subjects, MyJoyOnline reports.
President's statement
Mahama made the statement on September 12 during a meeting with citizens at the University for Business and Integrated Development Studies in the Upper West Region. The event took place as part of his Resetting Ghana Tour.
According to the president, the cabinet he chairs has not approved such a policy. He also questioned the feasibility of introducing Chinese when the country is struggling to provide a sufficient number of French teachers.

French and Arabic languages
Mahama noted that French is particularly important for Ghana because it borders several French-speaking countries. Regarding Arabic, he explained that teaching it in certain schools is not connected to a new policy for all public educational institutions.
According to the president, Anglo-Arabic schools were established under the rule of late President Jerry John Rawlings to encourage Muslim communities to send their children to school despite fears of religious conversion. Training of Arabic-language teachers for teaching in such schools is ongoing.
