Macron supported the idea of a meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin
French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s proposal to hold a face-to-face meeting with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. According to the French leader, such a move could be a key element of the diplomatic process toward achieving peace.
The French president emphasized that he supports direct dialogue between Ukraine and Russia.
“President Zelenskyy’s letter to Vladimir Putin proposing a meeting is a good initiative. We have always advocated for direct negotiations between Ukraine and the Kremlin,” Macron stated.
He noted that it is up to Kyiv and Moscow to determine the main parameters of a possible ceasefire and future peace settlement, while European partners are ready to facilitate this process.
According to Macron, Europe continues to actively support Ukraine both in the military sphere and regarding future security after the war ends.
“Ukraine is a sovereign state, and we—France, Germany, and the United Kingdom—are closely involved and will soon meet again with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss next steps,” the French leader emphasized.
In addition, Macron announced a new meeting of the “Coalition of the Willing” in Paris. The event is scheduled for July 13–14 during France’s national holiday, Bastille Day.
According to the French president, the upcoming meeting should help coordinate further decisions regarding support for Ukraine and the formation of a peace architecture after the war ends.
“We want to organize a meeting and structure the agreements,” Macron noted.
France, Germany, and the United Kingdom continue to coordinate their actions with Ukraine and work to find ways to achieve a just and sustainable peace.
Macron made this statement upon his arrival at the EU-Western Balkans summit, which is taking place in Montenegro.
