Macron arrived in Poland for talks with Tusk

French President Emmanuel Macron has arrived in Gdańsk to participate in the Polish-French intergovernmental summit and the celebration of Friendship Day between the two countries. This is the first high-level meeting since the signing of the enhanced cooperation agreement in May 2025.

During his visit, Macron held one-on-one talks with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The parties are discussing security challenges in Europe, bilateral relations, and transatlantic cooperation against the backdrop of Russia’s ongoing aggression. 

The program also includes the leaders’ participation in ceremonies at the French Military Cemetery and the laying of wreaths at the Monument to Fallen Shipbuilders. Heads of the defense, energy, and diplomatic agencies of both countries are participating in the plenary sessions. 

This is the first such summit since the signing of the agreement on enhanced cooperation between Poland and France on May 9, 2025, in Nancy, France. The agreement provides for mutual security guarantees and joint action in the defense industry. 

Strengthening the partnership between Paris and Warsaw is seen as a key element of stability on NATO’s eastern flank. It is expected that the meetings will outline new steps in the areas of economic and scientific cooperation. Specific agreements on energy and agriculture will be discussed at the level of the relevant ministries.

It was previously reported that Macron and Tusk will discuss deepening defense cooperation between France and Poland in Gdańsk, including issues of nuclear deterrence and European security. The leaders also plan to discuss strengthening the defense industry and joint defense projects. This was announced to journalists on Thursday during a briefing at the Élysée Palace.

Fabien Mandon, Chief of the General Staff of the French Armed Forces, stated that the possibility of open war with Russia remains his primary concern in the context of army preparations.
