Medvedev Threatened Japan with Dire Consequences Over the Kuril Islands
Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Federation Security Council, threatened Japan with “dire consequences” over Tokyo’s position on the sovereignty of the Southern Kuril Islands.
Medvedev stated that Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s remarks about the Kuril Islands being “historically Japanese” would allegedly change nothing, and he referred to the islands as Russian territory.
His statement came after Japan protested Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s trip to the Kuril Islands. Tokyo asserted that Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan, and Habomai are Japanese territory from both a historical and international legal perspective.
The issue of the Southern Kuril Islands has remained unresolved since the end of World War II. Japan considers the islands to be illegally occupied by Russia.

As a reminder, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin visited Iturup Island in the Kuril Archipelago—which is the subject of a territorial dispute between Russia and Japan—for the first time. Tokyo has already reacted to the Russian leader’s trip and lodged a strong protest with Moscow.
