Meloni voiced her support for Trump following the assassination attempt
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni issued a statement of support for U.S. President Donald Trump, the First Lady, and Vice President J.D. Vance following the shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Despite the recent cooling of relations between the leaders, Meloni strongly condemned acts of political violence.
In a post on social media platform X, the Italian leader emphasized that there is no place for political hatred and fanaticism in democratic societies. She urged that such acts of aggression not be allowed to “poison the space for free discussion.” This gesture of solidarity served as an important diplomatic signal amid tensions arising from differences in views on international policy.
On April 25, shots were fired during a correspondents’ dinner at the Hilton Hotel, prompting the immediate evacuation of Trump and the First Lady. The attacker, 31-year-old Cole Allen, was apprehended at the scene. Only one officer was injured in the incident, saved by his bulletproof vest; the president and the event’s guests were unharmed. Despite this incident, preparations for the British monarch’s visit are proceeding as planned, with the strictest security protocols in place.
