On the island of Fogo in Cape Verde, at least 25 people were killed when a bus carrying schoolchildren and teenagers plunged off a 30-meter cliff.
The bus, carrying 32 passengers, was heading to Ponta Verde Beach ahead of the start of the school year. While traveling along a winding coastal road in the north of the island, the vehicle crashed through a guardrail for unknown reasons and fell onto the rocks.
Rescue efforts are being hampered by the remote terrain, as it is impossible to reach the crash site by vehicle, forcing rescue workers to descend on foot. Several survivors with severe injuries have been hospitalized, some of whom are in critical condition. Local authorities warn that the death toll from the tragedy may rise.
