Number of migratory birds rises at Sunhua Lake in China — ECNS
The number of migratory birds has increased at Sunhua Lake in China’s Jilin Province. According to ECNS, this is linked to improved environmental conditions in the area around the body of water.
Chinese merganser population
Chinese mergansers, a species considered an indicator of water quality, have long lived in the Hongshi forest area. During the latest monitoring, about 50 birds, including family groups, were recorded there. Hongshi Forestry Co., Ltd., which is part of Jilin Changbai Mountain Forestry Group, said these data indicate a stable breeding population.
To protect the species, the forest area has introduced a monitoring system combining video surveillance, patrols and the use of drones. Specialists are also inspecting trees suitable for nesting and planning to install artificial nest boxes.

More than 10,000 geese
Environmental changes at the lake have also attracted large flocks of other migratory birds. More than 10,000 bean geese and greylag geese gathered in the Jiaohe section.
Local authorities have strengthened waterway management, restricted fishing and conducted fish stocking for more than two decades. According to the outlet, these measures have helped provide waterfowl with a food base and suitable habitats.
