Norwegians don't turn off the lights at home in the winter, even during the day: the reason
During the winter months in Norway, artificial lighting is used for much longer than during other times of the year. Because of the short daylight hours, the windows of homes, stores, and offices often remain lit starting in the early afternoon.
In many Norwegian homes, the lights are not turned off completely even during the day. This is primarily due to the long periods of darkness in winter and the scarcity of natural light.
"Because of the country’s northern location, the days are extremely short in winter. And this, in turn, affects everyday life. In winter, many people leave for work or school in the morning while it’s still dark, and by the time they return home, it’s already dark. Therefore, artificial lighting becomes essential not only in the evening but also for a significant part of the day. “For this reason, it’s not uncommon for several lights to be on in Norwegian homes from early morning and to remain on until late at night,” the article explains.
This means that during the winter months, Norwegians use artificial lighting for much longer periods.
Also, because of the long, dark winter, they try to make their homes brighter and cozier, since small table and floor lamps, window lights, and other elements of ambient lighting combine to provide a warm, pleasant glow, creating a cozy atmosphere in the home during long winter evenings.
How do Norwegians insulate their homes and never feel cold?
Most Norwegian homes feature a type of exterior cladding called “thermowood.” In fact, this is thermally treated wood that is processed using steam at a temperature of about 160–215 °C, which reduces its moisture absorption. As a result, it absorbs less moisture, becomes more stable, and better withstands external influences—rain, snow, frost, and even the scorching summer sun.
“Due to its lower moisture content and altered structure, thermowood is a poorer heat conductor, which in practice means: in winter, it transmits less of the cold, and in summer, it can help prevent the facade from overheating,” the article added.
