The exposed riverbed of the Danube in Budapest became the site of a spontaneous party
A spontaneous party took place in Budapest on a bare stretch of the Danube riverbed under the Margit Bridge. Photographer Jeanette Zhebek posted a video from Saturday night on Facebook. The post sparked a mixed reaction from users, according to Euronews.
Some commenters viewed the unusual party on the dry stretch of the riverbed positively. Others called it an alarming symbol of the Danube’s shallowing and a natural disaster that, in their view, is increasingly altering summers in Hungary and other parts of Europe.
The low water level in the Danube in the Hungarian capital is also evidenced by the appearance of the so-called “Hunger Rock” near the Liberty Bridge. A section of the riverbed near the central pier of the Margit Bridge is emerging above the water’s surface more frequently, for longer periods, and over a larger area.

As far back as 2018, people could walk in regular shoes to the submerged extension of the Margit Island shoal in the direction of the Parliament. Since then, this has been happening more frequently, lasting longer, and covering a larger area.
Architect and restoration specialist László Wild, who oversaw the most recent renovation of the Margit Bridge, previously stated that the Danube’s riverbed in the Budapest section is in a very chaotic state. In previous years, metal trash cans—common in Budapest before World War II—were found in the exposed areas, as well as the remains of scaffolding supports, which were likely used by Ernest Guén’s team during the bridge’s construction prior to 1876.
As the dry area expands, more and more people are crossing over from Margit Island to see the city skyline from an unusual vantage point, especially in the evening light.
