Ghana’s Olympic and Paralympic committees to be represented on new NSA board
Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has dissolved the governing board of the National Sports Authority (NSA). At the same time, Ghana’s Sports Act provides for representation of the Olympic and National Paralympic Committees on the new board if it is formed in accordance with this law.
The dissolution took effect immediately on September 2 and was part of a decision concerning the governing boards of nine state institutions. As MyJoyOnline reports, the membership of representatives of the two sports organizations on the dissolved board ended along with its dissolution.
Representation under the law
Section 4 of the 2016 Sports Act (Act 934) requires the inclusion on the NSA governing board of one representative each nominated by the National Paralympic Committee and the Ghana Olympic Committee. Therefore, the dissolution of the board does not exclude these organizations from the NSA governance structure.
On the previous board, the Paralympic movement was represented by National Paralympic Committee President Samson Deen. The Olympic movement was represented by Ghana Olympic Committee President Richard Kofi Akpokavie. They may rejoin the board if the respective organizations nominate them again and the president appoints them.

Powers of NSA leadership
The law does not require the representatives to necessarily be the presidents of the two committees. The organizations may nominate other individuals, but the candidates must be appointed by the president.
NSA Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah remains responsible for the authority’s day-to-day operations, as his appointment is separate from the composition of the governing board. At the same time, he does not have the authority to reinstate former board members or independently restore committees created by the dissolved board.
In particular, the future mandate of the Resource Mobilization and Partnerships Committee must be formally confirmed or renewed by the new board. The previous board established this committee to mobilize resources, develop strategic partnerships, hold the Constituency Games, and support sustainable sports funding.
