The Hormuz crisis has laid bare Trump's difficult position — Reuters

The crisis surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, caused by Iran’s blockade of the strait and a sharp rise in oil prices, has highlighted the difficult position facing U.S. President Donald Trump.

This is reported by Reuters.

According to the agency, Trump’s appeal to NATO allies did not yield the expected result—European partners refused to support Washington’s initiatives.

The main factor behind this stance remains the war in Ukraine. In Brussels and other European capitals, events in the Middle East are viewed primarily through the lens of containing Russian aggression.

Former Middle East negotiator Aaron David Miller noted that Trump finds himself in a difficult situation related to the conflict over Iran and does not yet have an obvious way out of it.

At the same time, according to an anonymous White House official, some advisors have urged the president to quickly find a way to de-escalate the situation and limit the scope of possible actions. However, it is unclear whether these recommendations will influence the head of state’s future decisions.

As a reminder, Tehran has begun allowing commercial vessels to pass through the Strait of Hormuz only for a fee.

In addition, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the start of consultations with key partners on creating a UN mechanism to ensure the security of the Strait of Hormuz.

Recall that war in the Middle East threatens global food security, according to Al Jazeera.

Donald Trump stated that after the “demise” of the Iranian regime, control of the Strait of Hormuz should be assumed by American allies. He criticizes Europe for its unwillingness to send ships to escort tankers. The U.S. is prepared to leave patrolling to its allies if Iran falls.
