UK Parliament to examine the country’s Eurovision failures — Politico Europe

The UK House of Commons Committee for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport will hold hearings in the coming months on the procedure for selecting the country’s representative for Eurovision. MPs are to determine the reasons for the weak results of British performers in the contest in recent years, Politico Europe reports.

Hearings on the selection process

Committee chair Dame Caroline Dinenage told the BBC that parliamentarians would discuss the process of choosing the UK entry for the contest. The committee is expected to hear from representatives of the BBC and the music industry.

According to Dinenage, MPs will consider whether the United Kingdom’s weak results are the consequence of unsuccessful song choices, weak performances or other reasons. The BBC currently selects the UK representative internally.

Contest results

At Eurovision 2026 in Vienna, British YouTuber Look Mum No Computer finished last with the synth-pop song Eins, Zwei, Drei, scoring one point. The United Kingdom automatically qualifies for the final because the BBC is one of the largest financial contributors to the European Broadcasting Union, the contest’s organizer.

Over the past 15 years, the United Kingdom has repeatedly finished in the lower half of the table. The only exception was Sam Ryder, who took second place in 2022 with the song Space Man. The BBC has not yet announced the country’s participant for Eurovision 2027, which is due to take place in May in Burgas, Bulgaria.
