The Pentagon will test service members for testosterone levels

The Pentagon will test service members for testosterone levels

The U.S. Department of Defense plans to introduce testosterone level testing for male service members. This was announced by Pentagon chief Pete Hagseth.

According to him, the screenings are intended to help identify cases of hormone deficiency and respond promptly to potential health issues among service members.

He noted that the screenings will apply to service members aged 30 and older and will be included in the annual medical evaluation of personnel.

Hegset stated that the goal of the program is to ensure that service members have adequate testosterone levels for “maximum effectiveness.”

“This is not about artificially boosting levels. It’s about restoring and optimizing your natural abilities,” he said.

Service members under the age of 30 will also be able to voluntarily undergo such testing.

Hegset called the initiative part of the “High-Testosterone Department of War” concept.

According to Bloomberg, the minister’s statement aligns with broader efforts by the U.S. administration to reduce the stigma surrounding treatment for low testosterone.

Testosterone replacement therapy can improve energy levels, sexual function, mood, bone density, and muscle mass in men with a confirmed testosterone deficiency.

At the same time, it has potential side effects, including effects on fertility, acne, fluid retention, increased red blood cell count, and other complications.

It is noted that in 2019, the U.S. National Institutes of Health investigated the potential impact of testosterone therapy on reducing injuries and improving combat effectiveness among military personnel in extreme conditions. The study noted that such therapy could help mitigate some of the physical and psychological consequences that service members face while carrying out their duties.

He said this in a statement he posted on social media.
