The winner of the Norwegian Math Olympiad donated his prize money to support Ukraine

Skantas Urbonas, who won the national mathematics Olympiad in Norway, donated his entire prize money to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the healthcare system. The prize amount is 15,000 Norwegian kroner (approximately 1,330 euros). 

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine reported on this act, expressing sincere gratitude to the young mathematician for his principled civic stance and contribution to the fight against Russian aggression.

Skomanas explained his decision by his conviction that his personal achievement would have much greater significance if it helped bring Ukraine closer to victory. He quoted the famous saying that evil triumphs only when good people remain indifferent. The gift from the winner was officially accepted by Ukraine’s Ambassador to Norway, Oleksiy Havrysh, who emphasized the importance of such solidarity among European youth with the Ukrainian people in 2026.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that such actions by foreign benefactors are extremely valuable for sustaining the country’s morale and defense capabilities. The State Border Guard Service and the National Guard received military medical buses from the Norwegian Defense Materiel Agency.
