Four Italian soldiers were wounded during NATO exercises in Latvia. Their infantry fighting vehicle came under machine-gun fire.
The live-fire exercises took place at the Latvian training range in Ādaži.
The soldiers, who are members of the 11th Regiment serving with the “Advanced Land Forces” mission, were injured.
The Dardo infantry fighting vehicle they were in came under machine-gun fire from another Italian infantry fighting vehicle of the same type.
The hatch of the vehicle that was fired upon was open, presumably because the soldiers were just getting out of it.
One of the wounded was hospitalized in serious condition but remains stable.
The other three soldiers are doing well and have already contacted their families. According to the Italian side, none of the victims’ lives are currently in danger.
The wounded were evacuated to a medical facility in Riga, where they are receiving the necessary medical care and undergoing examinations.
The Italian Ministry of Defense announced the launch of an investigation to determine the causes and circumstances of the incident.
