A banner containing threats against Trump appeared during Khamenei's funeral
A funeral procession took place in the city of Mashhad, Iran, during which the coffins of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and members of his family were carried through the streets. Large crowds gathered to pay their respects, causing the procession to be delayed.
During the mourning ceremonies, some participants carried a banner with the English inscription “We will kill Trump” and chanted calls for revenge.
The coffins containing the bodies of Ali Khamenei and his relatives were carried through the central streets of Mashhad to the burial site. Thousands of people accompanied the procession. Due to the large number of funeral attendees, the cortege arrived at the ceremony site late.
Iranian media report that during the procession, some participants carried a large red banner in English reading “We will kill Trump.” Red flags fluttered alongside the banner; in Iranian tradition, these are often used as a symbol of vengeance for the deceased.
In addition, state media showed footage of part of the crowd chanting: “Army, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, revenge, revenge!” It is currently unknown whether these chants were an official part of the ceremony or were merely shouted by individual participants in the procession. As of this writing, there have been no official comments from the U.S. regarding the appearance of the banner containing threats.
The funeral took place amid heightened security measures, and local media reported that due to the massive crowd, organizers had to adjust the procession’s route. CNN reported this.
This weekend, Iran will host high-level foreign delegations arriving for the funeral of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
