Following attacks on Wildberries warehouses in Russia, thousands of online retailers are shutting down
For the first time in the past five years, the number of entrepreneurs working in the e-commerce sector has begun to decline in Russia. According to analysts, in the first half of the year, the number of companies engaged in online commerce decreased by 23,500, to 456,700.
The number of new businesses in the online sales sector also fell sharply—over the course of six months, approximately a quarter fewer companies were launched than before. At the same time, the number of company liquidations rose by nearly 20%.
One of the reasons cited for this negative trend is the increase in commissions and service fees charged by major marketplaces. Drone attacks on Wildberries’ logistics facilities dealt an additional blow, causing some sellers to lose their inventory and be unable to resume operations.
Experts warn that if the current situation persists, the Russian e-commerce market could lose another 10–15% of its active sellers.
