After botched execution in Tennessee, UN urges against another attempt — Dawn

In the US state of Tennessee, 50-year-old Christa Pike survived after two administrations of lethal injections during an attempt to carry out her death sentence. She was taken to hospital after the procedure, which took place on Wednesday evening. Dawn reports. Pike’s condition remained unknown, and Tennessee officials did not explain how she survived the administration of pentobarbital.

UN appeal

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk called on Tennessee authorities not to make another attempt to execute Pike. The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said that her case demonstrates several grounds for abolishing the death penalty, including prolonged physical and psychological suffering resulting from multiple failed execution attempts.

It also noted that questions regarding the fairness of the trial remain unresolved. Robin Maher, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center, called the incident the worst botched execution of the modern era and said it was unprecedented.

Journalists’ accounts

The execution was carried out at the Riverbend maximum-security correctional facility in Nashville. Media witness Kim Chandler told CBS News that at the beginning of the procedure, Pike was visibly conscious, looking around and asking prison staff whether it was supposed to feel like that. Later, according to witnesses, she began to snore.

WPLN journalist Katherine Sweeney reported that those present heard Pike snoring and breathing loudly for nearly an hour. When journalists were being escorted from the room, she was alive, according to Chandler. During the broadcast, an ambulance with its signals on was also seen leaving the prison grounds, but it was not known whether Pike was being transported in it.

Pike’s lawyers said that the concerns they had raised about the procedure had materialized. They pointed to difficult vein access, vein damage, deterioration in the quality of pentobarbital, the lack of emergency medical care in the event of complications, and the closed nature of the execution protocol.
