Nigerian police say they are working to free those abducted in Borgu
Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, said that law enforcement officers, together with other security services, are working to safely free people abducted in the Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State. He said this during a visit to the residence of the state governor in the city of Minna.
As Premium Times Nigeria reports, Disu noted that the security forces are making progress in the operation to free the people. According to him, police have intensified intelligence gathering, operational coordination and cooperation with other agencies.
Attacks in Borgu
On August 21, suspected terrorists attacked several communities in Borgu, including Dekara, Gidan-Zana and Kpenyu. According to the publication, the attackers abducted worshippers during Friday Muslim prayers.
Initially, the number of abducted people was not specified. Later, the chairman of Borgu’s local council said that more than 60 people had been abducted and nearly 30 people had been killed in the coordinated attacks.

Operation coordination
To coordinate the operation, the inspector general of police deployed Assistant Inspector General of Police for Zone Seven Victor Olayu. He will coordinate the work jointly with other security services.
In June, militants suspected of links to Boko Haram reportedly attacked the Pissa community: they killed residents, abducted women and children, and burned homes. In August, nine bodies were found on the Wawa–Lumma road following suspected bandit attacks on travelers.
Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, who was represented at the meeting by Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, thanked the police and other security services for their efforts to free the abducted people. He also called for military and other security operations to be combined with non-military approaches in countering banditry and terrorism.
