Poland confirms readiness to support Ukraine long term — ERR News
In its new foreign policy strategy for 2026–2030, Poland confirmed its readiness to support Ukraine in the long term and called on Europe to take greater responsibility for security in its neighborhood. The central focus of the document is Russia’s aggression — as an aggressor state — against Ukraine, ERR News reports.
The strategy notes that the near future has become significantly less predictable and stable. Poland also draws attention to attempts by certain states to change the international order, as well as to growing support in democratic countries for strong leadership and the belief that authoritarian power is capable of controlling social, economic and technological changes.
Transatlantic cooperation
Warsaw views European integration as a historic opportunity for development, a foundation of security and a way to strengthen its own influence. At the same time, the strategy defines transatlantic relations as coexisting with the European project rather than being an alternative to it. Poland considers mutually beneficial cooperation between Europe and the United States necessary, while strengthening the EU’s defense dimension should not replace transatlantic ties.

Poland also seeks to maintain the U.S. military presence on its territory. Former U.S. Ambassador to Poland Daniel Fried noted that Poland’s strategic culture is consistent regarding the threat from Russia, the need for a strong NATO, ties with the United States and Poland’s interest in Ukraine’s survival.
Historical issues and role in the EU
The strategy declares an intention to build friendly and constructive relations with neighboring countries, remembering the difficult past but focusing on the present and the future. At the same time, in the assessment of the article’s author, disputes in Polish-Ukrainian relations have intensified again due to differing historical narratives regarding the events in Volyn. In July, Kyiv announced its intention to declassify all documents and conduct a joint investigation into these events.
By 2030, Poland plans to become a pillar of the EU’s military and economic security. It supports the enlargement of the European Union but opposes weakening accession criteria. Warsaw also considers the Weimar Triangle involving France and Germany, cooperation among the Nordic and Baltic countries, and strengthening security on NATO’s eastern flank important.
