Pakistan’s UN envoy Asim Iftikhar Ahmad appointed foreign secretary
Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, has been appointed the new federal foreign secretary. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced the personnel decision.
As Dawn reports, Ahmad’s appointment was also approved by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Dar said that under Ahmad’s leadership, the foreign ministry would continue advancing the country’s interests.
Change in office
Asim Iftikhar Ahmad will replace Amna Baloch, who has served as Pakistan’s 33rd federal foreign secretary since September 11, 2024. She is due to complete her civil service on September 17.

Ishaq Dar thanked Baloch for her service and for leading the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during an important period in the country’s diplomatic history. After retirement, she is expected to take up the post of Pakistan’s ambassador to Türkiye.
Appointee’s reaction
Ahmad called the appointment a great honor and thanked the country’s leadership for its trust. He said he looked forward to fulfilling his new duties to advance Pakistan’s highest national interests, and also thanked his family, friends, and colleagues for their support.
