Italian Prime Minister Meloni calls for a confederal EU model
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said that the European Union should choose a confederal model under which member states would retain broad national sovereignty while cooperating more effectively on strategic issues.

In an interview with the Italian newspaper Il Foglio, Meloni said that the EU’s current way of operating has proved insufficient to respond to the main challenges of the present day. She agreed that the bloc needs to change its approach but rejected the idea of deeper political integration.
The head of the Italian government also opposed abandoning the principle of unanimity in decision-making and creating a federal Europe that would go beyond nation-states. Meloni said that she disagrees with former Italian prime minister and European Central Bank president Mario Draghi, who linked the EU’s future to a move toward a more federal structure.

Position on Ukraine and AfD
Meloni also defended her position on Ukraine, saying that she will not form alliances with political forces that vote against supporting Kyiv’s defense. According to Anadolu Agency, she added that she would not change her political position because of the support of an individual party, or for electoral or personal gain.
Commenting on the growing popularity of Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, Meloni said that political movements raise issues of identity, countering irregular migration, and concerns about Islamization. In her view, the establishment should address these issues on their merits rather than rely on the political isolation of such movements.
