Estonian President Alar Karis arrives in Kyiv for Ukraine’s Independence Day
Estonian President Alar Karis arrived in Kyiv with his wife, Sirje Karis, on the morning of August 24 to take part in events marking Ukraine’s Independence Day. The couple reached the Ukrainian capital by train.
Meeting in Kyiv
In Kyiv, they were welcomed by Estonia’s new ambassador to Ukraine, Tiina Intelmann, and Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Mariana Betsa. Betsa previously served as Ukraine’s ambassador to Tallinn, ERR News reports.
In a statement, Karis said that independence means a people’s right to determine their own future. According to him, Ukrainians demonstrate this every day by courageously and unitedly resisting Russian aggression. The Estonian president also said that he had arrived to pay tribute to Ukrainians’ aspiration for freedom and stressed that the Ukrainian people must be able to determine their future freely and without fear.

Sirje Karis will take part in the sixth Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen, hosted by Ukraine’s First Lady Olena Zelenska. The summit is dedicated to preserving resilience amid uncertainty.
Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal is also in Kyiv. He is taking part in a meeting of ministers from the Nordic and Baltic countries, as well as events marking Ukraine’s Independence Day. President Karis and Prime Minister Michal are scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
