Cyprus president presents new ideas at meeting with Erhürman — Cyprus Mail
In Cyprus, President Nikos Christodoulides presented new ideas during a meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman. The meeting took place on Thursday ahead of both politicians’ trip to New York, Cyprus Mail reports.
According to the publication, Christodoulides’ proposals concerned confidence-building measures, methodology and the substance of the Cyprus settlement. The Cypriot president said he had not heard a negative response to these ideas and expressed hope that they could contribute to positive developments.
Assessments by the meeting participants
A UN communiqué stated that the meeting went well. Christodoulides also assessed its results positively, while Erhürman said it was better than the previous one.
The Cypriot president said that, given the necessary political will, progress could be achieved as early as next week. At the same time, a Cyprus Mail editorial stresses that the sides still have no agreement on confidence-building measures and methodology. The publication also states that there has been no progress on crossing points since the beginning of 2025.

Statement by the UN secretary-general
UN Secretary-General António Guterres said ahead of the UN General Assembly session that he would not hold a meeting with the two leaders on the sidelines of the General Assembly. According to him, a significant amount of work still needs to be done for this.
Guterres said the UN would seek to hold an expanded conference in a 5+1 format when the necessary conditions for its success have been created. He also stressed the need not to repeat the mistakes of the past.
According to the Cyprus Mail editorial, in the two months since Guterres’ visit to Cyprus, none of the conditions he identified for holding such a conference have been met. The publication believes that new proposals without agreements on the issues already outlined could complicate the path to an expanded meeting.
