Prince William insisted that Meghan Markle not wear his mother Diana's jewelry
New details have emerged regarding the conflict within the British royal family that preceded the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Royal expert Robert Jobson, in his new biography *Catherine, Princess of Wales: A Biography of the Future Queen*, claims that Prince William expressed serious concerns about his future sister-in-law’s use of family heirlooms.
Harry’s older brother was deeply troubled by the rapid developments in the couple’s relationship. He paid particular attention to the issue of jewelry that once belonged to his mother—the late Princess Diana.
“I was told that, still concerned about his brother’s romantic marriage, William sought assurances from the Queen that Harry’s fiancée would not wear Princess Diana’s jewelry, even though his own wife had been allowed to wear it,” Jobson explained in his book, excerpts of which were published by the Daily Mail.
Despite Prince William’s attempts to restrict access to his mother’s collection, the situation on the day of the ceremony appeared ambiguous.
Although Meghan appeared at the altar in St. George’s Chapel wearing Queen Mary’s diamond bandeau tiara, the evening reception featured a different choice.
For the festivities at Frogmore House, the Duchess of Sussex did, however, wear Princess Diana’s iconic aquamarine ring.
This move was a symbolic gesture, despite all of William’s previous attempts to secure a ban from Queen Elizabeth II.
The biographer highlights the deep rift within the royal family, which was carefully concealed from the cameras. The public image of idyll differed significantly from the reality behind the palace’s closed doors.
“Despite sharp barbs and insults from both sides, the wedding at Windsor in May 2018 was a huge success. In public, members of the royal family beamed with happiness, though privately, irreconcilable hostility reigned among them,” notes Robert Jobson.
