Massachusetts jury begins deliberations in Lindsay Clancy case
Jurors in the US state of Massachusetts have begun deliberations in the case of Lindsay Clancy, who is accused of murdering her three children. They must determine whether the woman is guilty of first-degree murder — the intentional and premeditated taking of a life. This was reported by BBC News.
The trial lasted five weeks. Clancy does not deny that she killed her two sons and daughter, aged from eight months to five years. Her defense argues that she was experiencing postpartum psychosis at the time of the killings.
Positions of the parties
Clancy's lawyer, Kevin Reddington, reiterated the defense's position in his closing argument that his client is not guilty because of mental illness. According to him, prosecutors will not be able to prove otherwise.

Prosecutor Jennifer Sprague did not dispute that Clancy had a mental illness. At the same time, she said that the defendant was able to distinguish right from wrong at the time of the killings. The prosecution insists that Clancy made a calculated decision to deliberately kill the children and concealed thoughts of harming them from doctors.
Possible verdicts
If convicted of first-degree murder, Clancy faces a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole. Jurors may also find her guilty of second-degree murder or manslaughter, which also carry prison sentences, or acquit her.
If Clancy is found not guilty by reason of insanity, she will not be released but sent to a psychiatric hospital, where she could potentially remain for life. After the killings, Clancy attempted suicide by jumping from a window and was left paralyzed as a result. She attended court hearings in a wheelchair.
