Putin Will Skip the G20 Summit in the U.S. but Will Attend the APEC Summit in China — Bloomberg
Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to personally attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in China, which will be hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping. At the same time, the likelihood of his attending the G20 summit in the U.S. alongside President Donald Trump is very low, Bloomberg reports, citing sources close to the Kremlin.
According to the agency’s sources, Putin plans to attend the APEC leaders’ meeting in person for the first time since 2017. The summit will take place on November 18–19 in Shenzhen.
Earlier, Russian Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov stated that Putin and Xi Jinping had discussed the possibility of a trilateral meeting with Trump on the sidelines of the APEC summit. According to him, the realization of this idea will depend, in particular, on the U.S. president’s decision regarding his participation in the summit.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin had previously reported on the possibility of a meeting between the three leaders in China. However, as of early September, the White House had not confirmed Trump’s participation in the APEC summit.
Bloomberg notes that Putin is trying to avoid multilateral forums where he might run into Ukraine’s European allies, as well as the leaders of Canada, Japan, South Korea, and Australia. The Kremlin is also concerned about the possible presence at the G20 summit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who had previously proposed to Putin that they hold a bilateral meeting to end the war.
Earlier, Peskov spoke about resuming trilateral talks between Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia.
Following that, Peskov stated that Russia is close to victory in the war against Ukraine.
An energy truce with Ukraine is not being discussed, according to Peskov.
