The UN Security Council will convene an emergency meeting in response to Russia's attacks on civilians in Ukraine

An emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council, convened in response to the sharp escalation of Russian airstrikes on peaceful Ukrainian cities, will take place this Thursday, May 28. The Ukrainian delegation has submitted a request to China’s Permanent Representative Fu Cong, whose country currently holds the Security Council presidency.

This was reported by Glavkom.

The official meeting will begin at 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time (10:00 p.m. Kyiv time). The main topic of the international discussion will be Russia’s systematic and deliberate destruction of Ukraine’s civilian population and critical infrastructure through massive missile and drone strikes.

On the eve of the diplomatic meeting, the international community expressed strong solidarity with Kyiv. Nearly 50 UN member states issued a joint, resolute statement condemning the recent massive shelling of the Ukrainian capital and other regions of the country. Ukraine’s Western partners and allies once again emphasized that deliberate strikes on residential buildings and energy facilities constitute a gross violation of international humanitarian law and the UN Charter.

Ukraine called for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council and an emergency meeting of OSCE bodies following the massive Russian attack on May 24.
