Russia expels group of Hungarian diplomatic mission staff — Anadolu Agency

The Russian Federation, an aggressor state, has expelled a group of employees of Hungary’s diplomatic institutions in response to Budapest’s decision to expel Russian diplomats. This was reported by Anadolu Agency, citing a statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Decision of the Russian Foreign Ministry

The ministry stated that Hungary’s chargé d’affaires in Russia had been summoned to the Foreign Ministry and informed of the decision. It concerns a group of employees of the Hungarian Embassy in Moscow, as well as Hungarian consulates in St. Petersburg and Kazan.

The Russian ministry expressed protest over the Hungarian authorities’ demand, announced on September 8, 2026, that several Russian diplomats leave the country. The Hungarian employees of diplomatic institutions were given two weeks to leave Russian territory.

Previous expulsion of diplomats

On September 8, Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán announced the expulsion of 10 Russian diplomats. According to her, they had carried out activities in Hungary that were unacceptable for diplomats under the Vienna Convention.

Orbán stressed that the decision was made to protect the country’s security and sovereignty, while it did not mean a severing of diplomatic relations with Moscow. The Kremlin had previously stated its intention to take adequate retaliatory measures and noted that Hungary’s decision would negatively affect the full range of bilateral relations.
