US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that a foreign party was involved in the foiled explosives plot targeting RAF Fairford air base in the United Kingdom. He said this in an interview with Fox News, Jerusalem Post reports.

Rubio’s statement

Rubio did not specify which foreign party he was referring to. According to him, the events of last weekend in the United Kingdom were a “very serious situation” and clearly involved a foreign party.

Separately, the US secretary of state said that Iran had openly threatened to attack American interests around the world. He stressed that the United States takes such threats seriously and that there will be consequences if an attack occurs or an attempt is made to carry one out.

Release on bail

Five suspects were detained in the case concerning the alleged plot and were later released on bail. Rubio said that this news caused concern among many people.

US President Donald Trump also told reporters that he was surprised by the British side’s decision to release the suspects. Responding to a question about a possible connection between the incident and Iran, he said it was “possible,” but declined to provide further explanations. Trump added that, in his opinion, the suspects would not have been released in the United States.

RAF Fairford air base in Gloucestershire is used by the US and British militaries. According to the publication, US forces also used it to launch attacks on Iran. Rubio said that more information may emerge in the coming days, but declined to disclose additional details of the investigation.
