Romania has extradited to Moldova a former deputy head of the secret service who had been sentenced to prison

Romania has extradited Alexandru Belan, the country’s former deputy head of the Information and Security Service, to Moldova. He was found guilty of disclosing state secrets and sentenced to nearly a year and a half in prison.

This was reported by Digi24.

On April 24, Belan, who was being held in custody in Bucharest, was taken from prison and transported to the border to be handed over to the competent Moldovan authorities following a court decision on his extradition.

Belan was detained in September 2025 following an investigation that revealed he had passed classified information to an employee of the Belarusian KGB. After the trial, in which Belan participated remotely, and the sentencing in Moldova, Chisinau requested his extradition.

Romania acquired Moldova’sonly seaport with access to the Black Sea.

As a reminder, the German Navy is exploring the possibility of establishing another military port on the North Sea coast amid growing military needs.
