Sadiq Khan urged diplomats to refute Trump's claims about London — Reuters
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has called on British diplomats to actively counter misinformation about the British capital.
He said this in an interview with Reuters.
According to him, U.S. President Donald Trump is spreading false claims that harm the city’s international image and investment appeal.
The public feud between the politicians has been going on for over a decade and has now escalated into a new phase of an information war.
U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized Khan, calling him a “terrible mayor” and making sensational statements about the security situation in London.
In particular, the American leader claimed that crime rates in the British capital are “skyrocketing” and that the city is allegedly seeking to “adopt Sharia law.”
Sadiq Khan categorically rejects these accusations, calling them pure propaganda and fabrications.
After meeting with ambassadors and high commissioners, the mayor emphasized that the diplomatic corps must be “armed with facts.”
This is necessary to promptly refute the false claims that U.S. President Donald Trump is broadcasting to an international audience.
“Much of this disinformation and lies originate from the United States of America. It is very important to counter the propaganda coming from President Trump,” Sadiq Khan emphasized during an interview with journalists.
The mayor of London acknowledged that the city is not perfect, but it remains significantly safer than major U.S. cities.
Statistics back up the mayor’s words: last year, London recorded the lowest number of homicides per capita in recorded history.
In addition, 2025 saw a significant decrease in the number of cell phone thefts—a problem that had previously been acute for the capital.
Despite this positive trend, U.S. President Donald Trump continues to focus on the negative aspects of life in the city.
The mayor warned that such rhetoric on social media could deter potential tourists, investors, and students.
This poses real risks to London’s economic prospects and its status as one of the world’s leading global hubs.
As a reminder, the mayor of London supported the transfer to Ukraine of cars that Londoners scrap.
Additionally, Britain loses nearly $200 billion annually due to Brexit.
