Sánchez sided with Meloni after Trump's attacks

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his support for Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni following Donald Trump’s harsh remarks. According to the Spanish politician, he expressed solidarity with his colleague not only publicly but also during a personal meeting.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed support for Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni following controversial remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump. He made these remarks at a press conference following the European Union summit in Brussels.

According to Sánchez, he could not find an exact definition for the U.S. president’s words, but felt it necessary to express solidarity with the Italian prime minister. “I expressed my full solidarity with her in light of this attack, which is neither political nor personal. I don’t know how to describe it,” the Spanish Prime Minister said.

Sánchez emphasized that he did not limit himself to a public statement to journalists. According to him, he also spoke personally with Meloni and expressed his support for her during their meeting.

The scandal erupted after an interview with Donald Trump, in which he made harsh remarks about the Italian prime minister. The U.S. president claimed that Giorgia Meloni herself had allegedly insisted on a joint photo during the G7 summit. “She begged me to take a photo with her! She wanted so badly to take a photo with me. I wouldn’t have done it, but I felt sorry for her,” Trump said.

His remarks caused a stir in European political circles. French President Emmanuel Macron also expressed surprise at the new conflict between Trump and Meloni, stating that he plans to discuss the situation with the Italian prime minister during their upcoming meeting.

Although Giorgia Meloni has long been considered one of Trump’s closest allies among European leaders, the U.S. president’s latest statements have sparked a new wave of tension in relations between the two politicians. Sánchez’s public support showed that Meloni has received backing from her European Union colleagues in this situation. Sánchez’s remarks were quoted by ANSA.

In July–May of the 2025–2026 marketing year, Spain took first place among buyers of Ukrainian sunflower oil, surpassing India. Thus, the Spanish market became a key export destination for one of Ukraine’s main agricultural products during that period.

A delegation from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior arrived in Ukraine. During the visit, the parties signed an Implementation Protocol on the readmission of persons, which outlines practical mechanisms for cooperation on the return and reception of citizens.
