Saudi Arabia has planted 159 million trees in the desert over the past five years
Over the five years since the launch of its national “green” initiative, Saudi Arabia has planted more than 159 million trees and restored approximately one million hectares of degraded land.
The program was launched in 2021 as part of the Vision 2030 strategy. Its long-term goal is to restore 40 million hectares of land and plant 10 billion trees across the country. The next target is to restore 2.5 million hectares by 2030.
To green arid areas, they use water from dams, rainwater harvesting systems, and other technologies that help plants survive prolonged droughts.
The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) cited Saudi Arabia’s results as proof that large-scale land restoration is possible even in regions with severe water shortages. The organization believes that this experience can serve as a model for other countries facing desertification and climate change.
