The Lithuanian Seimas has taken a step toward lifting the ban on nuclear weapons
The Lithuanian Seimas supported a proposal to remove from the constitution the article prohibiting the stationing of nuclear weapons on the country’s territory. Ninety-nine lawmakers voted in favor of the resolution, 13 voted against it, and five abstained.
To finally adopt the amendment, lawmakers must vote on it twice more, with a three-month interval between votes. According to Seimas Speaker Juozas Olekas, the first vote is scheduled for October 6, and the final vote for January 12 of next year. At least 94 out of 141 deputies will be needed to approve the bill.
Meanwhile, Remigijus Žemaitis, leader of the “Neman Stars” party, called the amendment unnecessary, stating that Russia and Belarus would use it for their own propaganda purposes.

Lithuania has developed a plan to evacuate Vilnius residents in the event of a military threat or a large-scale crisis. One of the three main routes out of the capital will be toward the border with Poland.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys stated that the European Union has no grounds to ease sanctions against Belarus. According to him, Alexander Lukashenko’s regime continues to persecute opponents, violate human rights, and support Russian aggression against Ukraine.
