Senator Fetterman says he will not leave the Democratic Party — The Hill

U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania John Fetterman said during the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin, United States, that he does not intend to switch to the Republican Party, despite disagreements with Democrats on a number of issues. As The Hill reports, the politician also declined to speculate on how he would act if Democrats win 51 seats in the Senate after the midterm elections.

Position on party affiliation

During a conversation with moderator and CBS News journalist Major Garrett, Fetterman was repeatedly asked about the possibility of leaving the Democratic Party. The senator replied that he does not see a path for himself in the Republican Party and called it a fact.

Earlier, Fetterman had already assured reporters on Capitol Hill that he did not plan to become a Republican. He urged them to wait for the midterm elections and noted that he himself is not up for reelection this time.

Disagreements with Democrats

During his first term in the Senate, Fetterman has in some cases voted together with Republicans. In particular, he opposed resolutions on war powers regarding Iran and opposed ending aid to Israel.

Earlier this month, the Democrat faced criticism from colleagues after appearing in a video from the Republican Party convention ahead of the midterm elections in Dallas. In the video, he introduced Republican Senator from Pennsylvania Dave McCormick as his great friend.

Answering an audience question about why he would not change his political identification to independent, Fetterman initially mistakenly called himself a lifelong Republican. After the moderator pointed this out, he corrected himself, saying that he is a lifelong Democrat.
