Xi Jinping holds phone talks with British Prime Minister Burnham

In China, President Xi Jinping held telephone talks with UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham. Xi congratulated Burnham on taking office and said that China and the United Kingdom are comprehensive strategic partners, ECNS reports.

Cooperation in finance and technology

According to Xi Jinping, despite differences in their social systems and national conditions, the countries have more common interests than differences. He called on the sides to respect and trust each other, overcome differences, seek common ground and expand mutually beneficial cooperation.

The Chinese leader noted that both governments seek to develop their economies and improve the well-being of their populations. He also said that during China's 15th Five-Year Plan for 2026–2030, the country will expand openness in education, healthcare and finance, creating potential for bilateral cooperation.

Xi Jinping called for developing exchanges and cooperation in science, technology, education, culture and sports. He separately expressed hope that the British side would fully protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese investors.

International coordination

Xi said that China and the United Kingdom, as permanent members of the UN Security Council and major global economies, support multilateralism, open trade and the UN's central role. He proposed strengthening communication and coordination within the UN, the G20 and the World Trade Organization.

Andy Burnham said that the United Kingdom is ready to maintain consistency in its policy toward China and develop a long-term stable strategic partnership. According to him, London is ready for high-level contacts, cooperation in various fields and the development of people-to-people exchanges.

Burnham also said that Britain's position on Taiwan has not changed and spoke in favor of resolving international crises through dialogue and cooperation in combating climate change. In addition, he positively assessed China's response to a landslide in the area of Girun Port in the Tibet Autonomous Region and thanked it for helping affected British citizens.
