Sikorsky proposed creating a European Legion made up of Ukrainian veterans
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has called for the creation of a permanent “European Legion,” which Ukrainian military personnel with combat experience could join once the war ends. According to him, the new unit would strengthen Europe’s defense capabilities and serve as a pillar of NATO’s European component.
“We—the European Union—need much deeper military integration. That is why I strongly advocate for the creation of a ‘European Legion’ — a dedicated, standing force that could recruit experienced professionals from the broader European family, including battle-hardened Ukrainian veterans after the war,” Sikorski said.
According to him, Europe must take responsibility for its own security.
“We cannot call Washington every time there’s a fire in our backyard—whether it’s a conventional threat or Moscow’s use of migration flows from Africa and the Middle East as a weapon against the EU,” the minister added.

He noted that this is not about building a parallel alternative to NATO or duplicating structures.
“We need a stronger European pillar within the framework of a stronger NATO. Our interests complement each other, not contradict each other. The United States remains an indispensable anchor of our collective defense, but its role is changing. America will continue to provide unmatched technological and intelligence capabilities, but Europe must do the hard work on the ground,” Sikorski said, according to Ekathimerini.
Earlier, Sikorski proposed intercepting Russian missiles over Ukraine.
Prior to this, in Poland, during a massive Russian missile attack on Ukraine on the night of July 29–30, an air raid alert was issued in part of the Lublin Voivodeship. After the alert ended, a crater about 10 meters in diameter and debris from a Russian Kh-101 missile were discovered in a field near the villages of Tarnava-Kolonia and Tokary.
