Heavy rain and a tornado brought Rome to a standstill

On Wednesday, June 3, a sudden tornado and heavy rains brought parts of Rome to a standstill, toppled trees, and caused widespread flooding, effectively paralyzing traffic in several neighborhoods. The storm affected several districts at once and turned the streets into rivers of water, according to the ANSA news agency.

In Rome, the weather literally disrupted the city’s normal rhythm in just a few hours, as strong winds, tornadoes, and downpours swept over the Italian capital, toppling trees, sweeping away market stalls, and turning streets into pools of water where cars got stuck and public transportation came to a halt.

In some areas of Rome, the wind was so powerful that it tore down market stalls and hurled them into parked cars, and after the rain, several blocks were immediately flooded. The areas of Nomentano, Salario, and Parioli were particularly hard hit, where traffic had to be completely halted due to flooding. Eyewitnesses posted videos showing a tornado in the Conca d’Oro area literally shaking roofs, damaging awnings, and flooding stores. The local market was temporarily closed due to dangerous conditions, and people tried to avoid going outside unless absolutely necessary.

Emergency services worked around the clock from early morning—firefighters responded to dozens of calls across various city districts, including Prati, Monte Sacro, Talenti, and Conca d’Oro. The main focus was on clearing roads of fallen trees and dealing with the aftermath of the storm, which simultaneously impacted both the city’s infrastructure and its transportation system.

Heavy rains and flooding were also reported in various parts of Italy, including Friuli, Tuscany, and Lazio, highlighting the scale of the weather front that swept through the country and left serious consequences for cities and roads.
