Russian intelligence agencies are recruiting Danish citizens to carry out sabotage operations against the defense sector – Reuters
The Danish Security and Intelligence Service (PET) reported that it had uncovered concrete evidence of Russian intelligence services recruiting Danish citizens through social media and gaming platforms.
Russia’s main objective is to prepare acts of sabotage against the European defense industry, particularly Danish companies involved in production and logistics in support of Ukraine. Counterintelligence officials note that civilians recruited in this way may initially be tasked with gathering data or photographing infrastructure facilities, which is later used to plan acts of sabotage.
The Russian side traditionally denies the allegations and links security risks to Denmark to its military-technical assistance to Ukraine. The Danish intelligence statement comes amid a general increase in the number of hybrid operations in Europe, including an investigation into an attempted drone attack at the Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany.
German investigators have identified two suspects in the planning of an attack on a Ukrainian passenger plane at Leipzig Airport, uncovering a link between their actions and Russia.
It should be noted that Berlin is prepared to officially hold Russia responsible for the attempted drone attack in Leipzig. Germany is also considering imposing direct sanctions against Russian entities.
Specifically, the Russian Consulate General in Bonn will be closed, the agreement regarding the “Russian House” in Berlin will be terminated, Berlin will propose new lists of individuals from Russia to the European Union for sanctions in the context of hybrid attacks and will tighten entry controls for Russian citizens. Germany has also announced that it will increase pressure on Russia’s “shadow fleet.”
