US and China discuss trade and AI — Channel NewsAsia
In New York, representatives of the United States and China held about eight hours of talks on trade, artificial intelligence and other strategic issues. The sides seek to ease tensions over trade, technology and other strategic issues. Topics of the talks included a possible extension of the trade truce and the introduction of safeguards for the development of artificial intelligence.
US officials are also seeking to ensure uninterrupted supplies of rare-earth magnets and critical minerals needed by manufacturers in the United States. China’s fulfillment of previous commitments to purchase US agricultural products may also be subject to review.
Working consultations could continue on Monday. The talks took place ahead of a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping scheduled for Thursday in Washington, before which the sides expect to reach possible agreements on trade, AI and other issues.
