US launches investigation into China and 14 countries over excess manufacturing capacity
The US government has initiated an investigation targeting China, India, Japan, Vietnam, the European Union, Taiwan, and nine other countries on suspicion of creating excessive manufacturing capacities that discriminate against American producers. Trade Representative James E. Gierer will determine whether these actions are unjustified or discriminatory and if they restrict trade with the US.
The probe is conducted under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, which grants authority to impose tariffs or other retaliatory measures against partners engaging in unfair trade practices. This move reflects urgent efforts by the administration of former President Donald Trump to reinstate tariff policies.
Data collection and analysis are ongoing, with decisions pending on potential measures that could influence international trade dynamics and relations between the US and the involved countries.
