US approves possible sale of 48 F-35s to Saudi Arabia — Jerusalem Post

The US State Department has approved a possible sale of 48 F-35 fighter jets and related equipment to Saudi Arabia. The estimated value of the proposed sale is about $24.3 billion.

Saudi Arabia’s request

Saudi Arabia requested 48 F-35 aircraft, 49 engines and other materials. The Jerusalem Post reported the US State Department’s decision, citing a statement by the US agency.

The State Department announced its approval of the potential sale on Thursday. The agency’s statement said the proposed delivery would include fighter jets and related equipment.

Purpose of the proposed sale

According to the State Department’s assessment, the sale is intended to support US foreign policy and national security objectives. The agency said it is intended to strengthen Saudi Arabia’s ability to deter threats to the kingdom’s security.

The State Department also noted that the proposed delivery is expected to improve cooperation among the militaries of Saudi Arabia, the United States, regional allies and NATO forces.
