US and China to discuss artificial intelligence risks during Xi’s visit — YLE News
Chinese President Xi Jinping has begun a state visit to the United States, where he is to meet President Donald Trump in Washington. Trump personally greeted the Chinese leader at Joint Base Andrews near the US capital. The visit’s programme also includes a military ceremony near the White House and a state dinner.
As YLE News reports, one of the main tasks of the talks is to preserve the trade truce concluded last year. The sides may extend it for several more months to avoid another sharp increase in tariffs. Ahead of the visit, US media suggested that the Chinese leader might not bring a large business delegation to the United States because trade and investment issues remain unresolved.
Trade and strategic raw materials
The trade confrontation between the United States and China continues. Washington has also expressed dissatisfaction that China continues to significantly restrict exports of strategically important rare-earth metals to the United States. According to US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, the leaders’ good personal relationship has not helped resolve this issue.
Last Friday, Trump signed a sanctions law targeting China and other buyers of Russian oil. China criticised the decision, but, as YLE News notes, the consequences of the law are expected after the visit.

Proposal on artificial intelligence
The United States intends to offer China a system of mutual notification about the goals and threats associated with the development of artificial intelligence. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that the mechanism should cover situations in which AI creates risks to national security.
The two countries’ approaches to AI regulation differ. In the United States, concerns have been voiced about the risks of recursive self-improvement of artificial intelligence, in which a system can develop itself. China is more focused on the social consequences of technology and on controlling phenomena that the Communist Party considers harmful to the system. In China, every new AI model requires government approval.
The sides may also discuss resuming arms control talks and strengthening military contacts to prevent misunderstandings, particularly in the Taiwan Strait. Senior officials from the US and Chinese military establishments met last month for the first time in two years.
