US imposes 50% tariffs on 110 goods from Canada
New 50% tariffs on 110 categories of goods from Canada, including certain types of cheese, motorboats, all-terrain vehicles and furniture, took effect in the United States at midnight on Tuesday. This was reported by CBC News.
The new tariffs are part of changes to the list announced by the administration of US President Donald Trump last week. The list also includes aluminum products, paper and wood products, iron or steel beams, electric lamps and mattresses.
Some goods were removed from the list
At the same time, the White House removed tariffs on 10 product categories, including salt, sugar, cement, electrical distribution equipment and panels, and toilet paper. The White House explained the decision by its intention to reduce the burden on American trade and better serve the public interest.
In 2024, Canada exported approximately $328 million worth of toilet paper to the United States, making it the largest foreign supplier of this product to the US market. According to UN Comtrade and the World Bank, in 2025 the United States imported an estimated $159.2 million worth of salts from Canada.

The value of the changes has nearly evened out
University of Ottawa professor of business and trade law Wolfgang Alschner calculated that the categories from which tariffs were removed cover approximately $2.41 billion in trade, while the new tariffs cover $2.56 billion based on 2025 figures. In his view, these volumes are virtually the same in monetary terms, and overall tariff coverage has increased only slightly.
Electrical distribution equipment and panels have the highest value among the categories for which tariffs were lifted: in 2025, the United States imported approximately $750 million worth of them from Canada. Such equipment is used, in particular, in cars and aircraft.
The new measures were introduced after the United States and Canada failed to reach a trade agreement in August. On August 22, the United States imposed 50% tariffs on a broad range of Canadian goods, and Canada responded from September 8 by applying tariffs to nearly 700 categories of US products. Trump also announced a future ban on imports of Canadian alcohol, motorcycles and a number of other goods, which is set to take effect on September 29.
